Who (or what) is Lim Li Wei?

I am (b. 1986) raised in a port town, now a city called Klang on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. I grew up with Legos and books being my main source of entertainment.

‘Lim’ is my family name, and ‘Li Wei’ is my given name. As it is a convention in Malaysian Chinese names, the surname is placed before the given name. Hence, I hope this clarifies the structure of my name.

I am culturally mixed as my mother is of Melaka Peranakan descent and my father is a first-generation Chinese in Malaysia.

English is my main language of communication.

Academic Background

Studying science subjects throughout my early schooling years, I had no formal art education until 2009, when I enrolled on the Fine Arts Diploma Programme at the Malaysian Institute of Arts.

Nine years later, in 2018, I graduated with a Master’s in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design (part of the University of the Arts London).

Journey Post-Graduation

Post-graduation, life was confusing as the COVID-19 pandemic started soon after graduation. During my time in art school, I was involved in several exhibitions in Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

My art evolved alongside my perception of the world, which is natural for many artists. In 2011, I started with themes like socio-political narrations and criticism in a surrealist style. I mainly produced drawings with dry media or oil on canvas.

I paused my artistic venture in 2022 as I went on a “soul-searching” adventure. The ‘adventure’ led to unprecedented events, which eventually led me to start my journey of recovery from Bipolar Type 2 Disorder and a combination of other colourful diagnoses which I had been battling since 2007.

My Beliefs and Interests

I am an active member of Soka Gakkai International and a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism. I advocate against any form of prejudice and bias, and I advocate for the awareness of many aspects relevant to society and the emphasis on mutual understanding via dialogue, compassion and respect for the dignity of life.

I create artwork that invites discussions about the subject matter and the situation presented.

My free time is spent studying, learning and enriching myself with new subjects that intrigue me. Drawing and reading remained my fondest hobby, and art and philosophy are my core interests.

I now volunteer my time and energy to share my knowledge as a guide in local art exhibitions. You can sometimes find me at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia.

What is the purpose of this platform?

This platform serves as my portfolio, product catalogue and knowledge base for everyone. The creation of this platform is based on three fundamental values.

Accessibility

I intend my work to be accessible to everyone. Hence, the catalogue of products which are presented on this platform will be available in many formats, including (but not limited to) stickers, mugs, bags, apparel and posters.

There will be a knowledge base section on the blog page of this website, where I will share everything I know to get everyone acquainted with and understand the subject of art.

Sustainability

To ensure the sustainability of natural resources and reduce the carbon footprint of my art practice, I am selling my works as designs on various reusable products in a Print-on-Demand style on RedBubble.

90% of my drawing and designing processes are done digitally. I no longer produce and sell one-of-a-kind paintings or drawings for exhibitions in galleries.

Equality

Part of my designs will be themed on equality with mutual understanding and respect for humanity for a happy and peaceful coexistence regardless of our differences.

Any Last Words?

This platform is managed by myself alone for the time being. Hence, your patience and support are very much appreciated.
